Llangollen is a popular all-year-round holiday destination and it has something to offer everyone. It is convenient for walkers, cyclists, canoeists and anglers exploring the spectacular local countryside. It is a great base for those venturing further a field to Snowdonia, the North Wales coast or the nearby towns of Wrexham, Chester, Oswestry and Shrewsbury.
Llangollen is famous for the International Musical Eisteddfod held in July each year. Musicians, singers and dancers from all over the world compete at the Royal International Pavillion in the town. Overlooked by the 13th century ruins of Dinas Bran Castle, the town has a carefully restored station and steam railway for trips through the scenic Dee Valley.

From Llangollen Wharf, horse drawn trips can be taken on the Llangollen Canal. Longer journeys can be made by narrowboat across the majestic Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the highest aqueduct in Britain (a Grade I listed building and a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Historic monuments include Valle Crucis Abbey and the 9th century Pillar of Eliseg in the foothills of Horseshoe Pass. Museums include the Motor Museum and Canal Exhibition, and the Llangollen Museum. Plas Newydd, the former home of 'the Ladies of Llangollen', is on the edge of town and two major National Trust properties, Chirk Castle and Erdigg are nearby. There is horse racing at Bangor-on-Dee.
